Understanding adhd

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, activity levels and impulse control. It begins in childhood and often continues, in some form, into adolescence and adulthood. It is not caused by poor parenting or a lack of discipline.

Children with ADHD may find it hard to sit still, wait their turn or follow instructions, or they may be dreamy and easily distracted without being hyperactive — a presentation more often missed in girls. Adults with ADHD may struggle with organisation, deadlines, restlessness and impulsive decisions.

ADHD often comes with strengths such as creativity, energy and enthusiasm. With the right support, children and adults with ADHD can do very well.

Common signs

  • Easily distracted; difficulty finishing tasks or homework
  • Careless mistakes and frequently losing things
  • Fidgeting, running around or difficulty staying seated
  • Talking excessively or interrupting others
  • Acting without thinking; difficulty waiting
  • Poor organisation and time management
  • Symptoms present at home and at school, for at least six months

Having some of these signs doesn’t mean you have a condition. A professional assessment helps make sense of them.

When to see a psychiatrist

Consider an assessment if attention or hyperactivity difficulties are noticeably greater than in other children of the same age, are present in more than one setting, and are affecting learning, friendships or family life.

Adults who have struggled lifelong with attention, organisation and restlessness — especially if this affects work or relationships — can also be assessed.

How treatment works at The Peaceful Mind

Assessment includes a detailed developmental history, information from parents and teachers (often using standard rating scales), and checking for other conditions such as learning difficulties, anxiety, sleep problems, hearing or vision issues.

Treatment is tailored to the child’s age and needs. Parent training, classroom strategies, routines, visual schedules and breaking tasks into small steps are the foundation. When symptoms are moderate to severe, ADHD medicines can significantly improve attention and self-control; they are prescribed and monitored carefully, with regular checks of growth, appetite, sleep and heart rate.
