Understanding alcohol, smoking & tobacco de-addiction

Addiction is a health condition, not a moral failing. Alcohol, nicotine (cigarettes, bidis, gutkha, kharra, mishri) and other substances change the brain’s reward system, which is why stopping can be so hard even when a person truly wants to. Cravings, withdrawal symptoms and habits tied to daily routine all play a part.

Alcohol use can lead to liver disease, accidents, sleep and mood problems, and strain on family and finances. Tobacco is one of India’s leading preventable causes of cancer, heart disease and lung disease. The good news is that quitting brings health benefits at any age, and effective treatments are available.

De-addiction care is confidential and respectful. Families are often the first to seek help, and they are welcome to consult even before the person is ready.

Common signs

  • Needing more of the substance to get the same effect
  • Strong cravings or thinking about using often
  • Trying to cut down but being unable to
  • Withdrawal symptoms — shaking, sweating, restlessness, irritability, poor sleep
  • Using in the morning or to “feel normal”
  • Problems at work, at home or with health because of use
  • Hiding use or feeling guilty about it

Having some of these signs doesn’t mean you have a condition. A professional assessment helps make sense of them.

When to see a psychiatrist

Seek help if you have tried to stop on your own without success, if use is affecting health, work or family, or if you notice withdrawal symptoms when you stop.

People who drink heavily every day should not stop alcohol suddenly without medical guidance, as withdrawal can be dangerous (with risk of fits or severe confusion). A doctor can make withdrawal safe.

How treatment works at The Peaceful Mind

Treatment starts with an honest, non-judgemental assessment of the pattern of use, health effects, motivation and support at home. Physical health checks, such as liver tests, may be advised.

For alcohol, medically supervised detoxification relieves withdrawal safely; medicines that reduce cravings or support abstinence may then be prescribed. For tobacco, nicotine replacement and other quit-smoking medicines, along with a planned quit date and craving-management strategies, greatly improve success.

Counselling focuses on motivation, triggers, coping skills, relapse prevention and rebuilding routines and relationships. Family sessions help everyone support recovery. Where inpatient care is needed, an appropriate referral is arranged.
