Understanding sexual health concerns

Sexual well-being is an important part of overall health and relationships, yet it is one of the hardest topics to talk about. Many people quietly carry worries for years, sometimes trying unverified remedies or advertisements that promise quick cures.

Sexual difficulties are common and can affect people of any gender and age. They may be linked to anxiety, depression, relationship stress, past experiences, lack of accurate information, physical health conditions such as diabetes or blood pressure, hormonal changes, alcohol or tobacco use, or side-effects of medicines.

Dr. Vibha Bhide has completed a certificate course in Sexual Medicine. Consultations are private, respectful and free of judgement, for individuals and couples.

Common signs

  • Low or mismatched sexual desire
  • Difficulties with arousal or erection
  • Early or delayed ejaculation
  • Pain or fear associated with intercourse
  • Performance anxiety or worry about sexual health
  • Difficulties consummating a marriage
  • Sexual side-effects from medicines

Having some of these signs doesn’t mean you have a condition. A professional assessment helps make sense of them.

When to see a psychiatrist

Consult if a sexual concern is causing you distress, affecting your relationship, or has continued for several weeks or months. Couples are welcome to come together.

It is also worth discussing if you have noticed sexual side-effects from any medicines, as alternatives may be available.

How treatment works at The Peaceful Mind

The first step is a confidential conversation to understand the concern, relevant health factors and relationship context. Physical health checks or tests may be suggested, and referral to a gynaecologist, urologist or other specialist is arranged where needed.

Treatment may include accurate sexual health information, counselling for anxiety and relationship issues, structured couple exercises, treatment of associated depression or anxiety, and medicines when appropriate.
