Why women’s mental health deserves attention

Depression and anxiety are more commonly diagnosed in women than in men. Part of this is biological: hormonal shifts across the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, the postpartum period and menopause can influence mood. Part is social: many women carry multiple roles — at work, at home, and caring for children and elders — often with little time for themselves.

Many women also feel they must “manage” and not trouble anyone, so they ignore the signs until they are exhausted.

Signs it may be time to talk to someone

  • Feeling low, irritable or tearful most days
  • Constant tiredness that rest doesn’t fix
  • Worrying all the time or feeling on edge
  • Changes in sleep or appetite
  • Losing interest in things you once enjoyed
  • Feeling overwhelmed, guilty or “not good enough”
  • Strong mood changes before periods, after childbirth or around menopause

Seeking help is strength

Asking for help is not a sign of weakness or failure. It takes courage to recognise that you are struggling and to do something about it. Just as you would see a doctor for a persistent physical problem, it makes sense to seek help for your emotional health.

Looking after yourself is also a gift to the people you care for. A mother, daughter, wife or professional who is well supported is better able to support others.

Small steps that help

  • Protect some time each day that is only for you
  • Keep regular sleep and meals as far as possible
  • Move your body — even a short daily walk helps mood
  • Share responsibilities; it is okay to ask for help at home
  • Stay connected with people who make you feel supported
  • Reach out to a professional if things don’t improve in a few weeks

Key takeaways

  • Hormonal life stages and multiple roles can affect women’s mental health.
  • Persistent low mood, worry or exhaustion are signals worth acting on.
  • Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
  • Small daily steps and professional support both help.
